We all love food.  In particular, sweet things, and fatty things. In the words of the Borg, Resistance is futile.

But what if you could eat all these lovely things every now and again? can we actually train ourselves to eat in moderation?

Well, the answer is YES. You can eat in moderation, you can balance your diet out.  And you can loose weight this way. All you have to do is move yourself.

1. Too much of everything?

We are always bombarded by stories in the media these days about how we eat too much sugar, red meat, drink to much alcohol etc, and it’s really difficult to know where to start.  The only thing that needs to change is how much you move.  You can eat a bit of what you like, if you move your feet in accordance with what you put in your mouth.  That’s right folks, get out there and take a walk, or a run, or maybe a HIIT sessions with me. The benefits of exercise go beyond weight loss.

2. You could improve your memory

When you move beyond the sofa and take a walk, or a jog round the block, you actually increase the amount of oxygen going to your brain.  Any sort of activity that involves moving your body in some way naturally increases your blood pressure and blood flow across your body.  It’s also true that the part of your brain that’s responsible for learning and memory, the hippocampus, is highly active during exercise.  So if your trying to solve that Sudoku puzzle, or want to be really good at Who Wants to be a Millionaire tonight, go somewhere and move your feet.

3. Standing Tall

So when you sit around a lot, your muscles get stiff.  Your back muscles in particular need regular exercise to stay supple and supportive of your body frame.  If  you sit around too much, you are leaving yourself vulnerable to back problems. Regularly exercising your back, abs and other muscles can help to improve your posture, even when your sitting.  Good posture can even turn your body language around; standing tall is good for feeling better and looking as if you have a positive attitude.

4. Generally feeling better

Exercise gives you a feel good endorphin rush.  You will also feel better that your doing something towards your goals, rather than thinking about what you haven’t achieved this week.  We all have those weeks where our intentions were amazing, but in reality, life just got in the way of exercise.  It happens to me too, and Personal Training is my job.  When we have those weeks, just pick up and dust off, and focus on the next time.  When you do get out there and do some exercise, you can pat yourself on the back for getting over that little blip last week.  Don’t be too hard on yourself. It happens to all of use sometimes.

5.You might sleep better too

When you sit around too much, your body doesn’t like it.  We are like machines.  We have to do a certain amount of work to keep oiled up and going.  If you have trouble going to sleep, or staying asleep, exercise can help with that too. It’s best to try and work out on the morning or early afternoon, ideally not before bed.

6. More energy for exercise!

That’s right, the more you move, the more energy you will have to move! If you take regular exercise, the combined benefit of this is that you should have more energy throughout your daily life.  If you take up a regular exercise schedule, all of a sudden you will find that you have more energy for the simple tasks.  Household chores seem easier, walking the kids to school is a breeze.  Once you get there, your going to want to stay there and keep that momentum up.

7. A longer life?

It’s possible that with the right exercise regime, you could even live longer.  I have recently read that adding exercise to your weekly routine, can be as beneficial as quitting smoking in those that don’t actually smoke. When your sitting, your calorie burn drops dramatically, your body doesn’t use the glucose in your blood as well, and your muscles start to stiffen up if your sitting for long periods.  Over the course of months and then adding up to years, this effect is really detrimental to your health.  Going for a walk at lunch time, or after work could be the difference between developing diabetes, or not developing it.  It’s really as simple as that. Your body was designed to move, not sit.
